Compare · Antivirus vs EDR

Why one EDR beats a stack of consumer antivirus and what auditors actually look for

Consumer antivirus catches yesterday's malware. Business-grade EDR contains today's incidents before they spread. Here is how the four most-used SME options compare.

What is the actual difference?

Most SME owners we audit assume antivirus and EDR are the same thing with different names. They are not. Three plain-English distinctions cover most of the gap.

Distinction 1

Signature vs behaviour

Consumer antivirus looks for known bad files. EDR watches for suspicious behaviour: process injection, ransomware encryption patterns, unusual privilege escalation. New malware never matches a signature on day one.

Distinction 2

One device vs the whole team

Consumer antivirus protects a single laptop. EDR consoles let one human see the whole estate, push policy changes, and review alerts across every device in one place.

Distinction 3

Block vs contain

Consumer antivirus blocks bad downloads. EDR isolates an infected device from the network at the moment of detection, so a ransomware incident on one laptop cannot reach the file server.

What if I am already on Microsoft Defender?

Defender for Business (the paid Microsoft 365 SKU) is a credible EDR. Defender free (the version that ships with consumer Windows) is not. Most SG SMEs we audit have Defender free running with an unpaid licence gap they did not know about.

If you are already on Defender for Business or another paid EDR, declare it in your cyberscan and the assessment moves to Strong. We have a separate comparison for that case: StrongKeep compared to Microsoft Defender.

The hidden cost of stacking

Most SMEs we audit pay for four or five overlapping tools: consumer antivirus, DNS filter, password manager, training platform, and quarterly compliance consulting. Add them up and the per-device cost is usually 1.5 to 2 times a single bundled EDR plan.

One vendor, one console, one bill. Consolidating onto a single bundled plan typically lands well below the sum of the line items it replaces, and renewals stop showing up five times a year.

Switch from consumer antivirus to business-grade EDR

Protection plan includes Cortex EDR, DNS filtering, password manager, and bite-sized cyber training. One line item of US$39 (S$49) per month, billed annually, covering up to 5 devices. First device protected in minutes; whole team in under two hours. CSA Cyber Essentials evidence collection and audit-ready compliance reporting live in the Compliance plan layered on top.
